MOVIE AND TELEVISION REVIEWS

ANIMATION

Despicable Me 2

Starring: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand
Directed by: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud

Rating: PG
Run time: 98 minutes

Synopsis: Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal.

Once again, the Minions steal every scene they were in. I found myself wanting more of the interactions between the minions and the girls, Agnes and Edith especially. Gru has always annoyed me to an extent, but I think he was meant to be that way. Overall, the movie was a decent followup to the first film. I don't think they could have added anything else without going over the top. I will be looking forward to the Minions getting their own film in December 2014.

ANIMATION

Epic (2013)

Starring: Christoph Waltz, Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyoncé Knowles, Colin Farrell
Directed by: Chris Wedge
Rating: PG
Run time: 102 minutes
Synopsis: A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group characters in order to save their world -- and ours.

Epic wasn't bad. It had cute moments. The voice actors are all big celebrities with easily recognizable voices. I feel this always hurts animated productions. Suspending belief and imagining that the voice is truly the character suffers when you see said actor or actress everywhere. Ultimately, the battle between good and evil to either protect or destroy the natural world left me with a bit of deja vu. Haven't I already seen this before? Back then, it was Ferngully: The Last Rainforest...and it was a human slacker who was shrunken down to save things with a faerie. The funny sidekick was a bat instead of two slugs.

FAMILY

The Odd Life of Timothy Green

Starring: Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton, CJ Adams

Directed by: Peter Hedges
Rating: PG
Run time: 105 minutes
Synopsis: A childless couple bury a box in their backyard, containing all of their wishes for an infant. Soon, a child is born, though Timothy Green is not all that he appears.

This movie is cute, sad and sweet. Beneath the fantasy, it's about parenting in whatever form it comes in. However, this tends to be too sweet and sappy to really make any clear statement. Everything is simply too perfect even when it shouldn't be. This one might be better shoved in the Disney vault and forgotten.
