Nikki Sixx, bassist of Motley Crue, joined forces with producer James Michael and guitarist DJ Ashba to form Sixx:A.M. in 2006. The group made their debut on July 16th, 2007 with a small live that consisted of five songs. Those five songs were released along with eight others on August 21st, 2007 as The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack. The album was a companion to Sixx's autobiography released the same year, The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star.  Life is Beautiful was chosen as the lead single from the album. Pray for Me, Tomorrow and Accidents can happen were also released as singles during 2008.

June 2008 saw the release of the band's first ep, X-Mas in Hell. Hype for the band grew with fans providing constant support and interest in seeing the band tour. The trio then joined Motley Crue's Crue Fest in July 2008 along with acts like Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Trapt. The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack was rereleased as a deluxe edition in November 2008, which included a bonus ep titled Live is Beautiful.

2009 was rather quiet with James Michael and Nikki Sixx both confirming that the band would be recording a second album. It wasn't until February 2010 that Sixx revealed they were officially recording. However, the album was delayed. The lead single, Lies of the Beautiful People was released in February 2011, followed by This is Gonna Hurt being released in single form. Once again, the new album was a tie-in to Nikki Sixx's next book, This is Gonna Hurt which was released in April 2011. The album, also titled This is Gonna Hurt, was released on May 3rd 2011.  December 2011 saw the release of another ep titled 7.

The trio's activities in 2012 were slim with the release of three singles, Are You With Me Now; Help is On The Way and Skin. 2013 was only marked by mentions of the band on twitter by Sixx and Michael.  The pair mentioned recording new material for an upcoming album. The release of a single, Gotta Get it Right in August 2014 gave fans hope for more music. It was followed in September with the release of Let's Go. That album dropped in October 2014, titled Modern Vintage. The opening track, Stars, got the single treatment in November 2014.

The group is touring in 2015 with dates that take them overseas as well as domestically. They'll join VAMPFest in February 2015 with bands like Vamps and SADS. With the official disbandment of Motley Crue at the end of their final tour, Sixx:A.M. looks poised to be Nikki Sixx's only musical outlet. Here's hoping that it leads to bigger and more consistent releases.
