Tak Matsumoto - Strings of My Soul

Instrumental albums can be difficult to do well even if the musicians are talented. There has to be something compelling about each and every track to keep the listener engaged. With Tak Matsumoto, there is no doubt about his level of talent or ability to hold an audience captive. Guitarists around the world should seek this man’s recordings, both solo and with B’z, out in order to learn a lesson or two about how to handle the instrument. It’s more than technical skill. He’s able to layer emotion in the sounds he coaxes from his guitar. The instrument feels as if it’s an extension of his body rather than a separate object. At the same time, the musicians that he chooses to work with are also highly skilled. There should be nothing that will disappoint on this album.

Kiyoharu - Under The Sun

Under the Sun is a solid album that might disappoint some long term fans. There are no big surprises from the album. The tracks are often reminiscent of his previous works. However, if you’ve enjoyed those, then you’ll likely enjoy this one. There was a surprising collaboration between Kiyoharu and Miyavi on the track Judie, which turned out quite well. The real standout tracks were Ryuusei and Namida Ga Afureru. If you’re a fan of his ballads, be sure to give these two a listen. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

J - Freedom No. 9

This album will come as no great surprise to fans of J’s solo efforts. You won’t find anything fancy or over the top here. J’s charm lies in the simplicity of his approach. He’s well aware of his vocal range and uses it to the best of his ability. Overall, his style is firmly fixed in a post-grunge, alternative rock niche. It’s a far more entertaining listen than anything he’s released as part of Luna Sea.
