J first appeared in the music scene in 1990 as the bassist of the visual kei band, Luna Sea. The band had their major label debut in 1992. The success of Luna Sea launched an opportunity for the band members to pursue solo projects. J made his solo debut with the single, Burn Out, in June of 1997. His first album, Pyromania, was released the following month with another single, But You Said I'm Useless, in October of the same year. A dvd of the his first solo tour, PYROMANIA TOUR'97 ~Crime Scene~, was also released the same month.

J's solo career paused while he participated in activities with Luna Sea. It wasn't until the band's first disbandment in late 2000 that he was able to refocus on his solo career after a break. The single, Perfect World, was released in July of 2001. It wasn't until December 2001 that his next album, Blood Muzik, was released. 2002 was a busy year for J with two singles, a mini-album, a live dvd and a full length album being released. 2003 was considerably slower with only a mini-album and a live dvd.

His releases picked up again with the next three years bringing a pv collection, a live dvd, four singles, two best ofs, and two full albums. 2007 was a strong year with two singles, a live album and a full album, despite the one night revival of Luna Sea. 2008 saw the release of a single and another album. However, it was 2009 that brought what are arguably J's best releases with the release of two mini-albums, Stars from the Broken Night, and Here comes the Nameless Sunrise. In 2010, Luna Sea announced their reunion with J returning to hand activities. Aside from live dvds and a self-cover album, there was no singles or albums from J until 2012 when he released the album, On Fire. He released his ninth album, Freedom No.9 on October 23rd, 2013.

J's alternative rock sound stands out amongst his visual kei peers.  His gruff, unpretentious vocals suit the sound of his music perfectly. There's no growling, screaming vocals or overzealous posturing. If you're looking for a post-grunge, alternative rock sound, give his music a chance. I doubt you'll be disappointed in what he's offering.
